Walking in a Windham Wylderland

We set off before dawn, full of excitement, yawns and coffee. By the time day broke, the city that never sleeps was left groggily in the rearview. My partner, suffering graciously beneath the twang of country music I so enjoy on trips like these, suggested a pull off for breakfast about ninety minutes into our trip.

Not a thought that would occur to me while hiking trails and snow covered slopes beckon, but a fantastic one nonetheless. I was hungry for more than adventure! She suggested a place just short of an hour further.

We made our way through the town of Phoenicia, making a mental note to explore it more fully on another trip soon. When we pulled into the Phoenicia Diner lot, I could already tell that we were in for a treat. The nostalgia of the signage welcomes you from the road like an old friend.

The door cracks wafting over you with a pleasant aroma of warm coffee, bacon grease and the sheer history of the place. Ears are filled with tones of joyous conversation - groups planning their snowy weekends on the mountains or in the lodge, families laughing at nothing at all, a waitress greeting folks with familiarity and coffee refills.

We ordered from a menu of unendingly appealing options: for me, a breakfast burrito; my partner, an egg skillet. My only regret is that we did not have more time and appetite there. If only we could have eaten for twelve, just to sample the delights in which others around us were partaking.

Once we were full up on both the food and hospitality, we were on the road again. It had been far too long since I was able to trade the hustle and bustle for a moment of nature and peace. I needed adventure and fresh air and open spaces and mountain life. So Wylder Windham came a' knocking.

Delightfully resting at streets' end in the tranquil embrace of Windham town, Wylder Windham offers a weekend escape unlike any other. Adventurers can find here the promise of unforgettable experiences awaiting just beyond the doorstep. Here, amidst the whispering pines and babbling brook, every moment is infused with the spirit of both exploration and relaxation.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the rustic charm of Wylder Windham's architecture, seamlessly blending with the natural beauty that surrounds it. It feels as though the complex has been there since the beginning, evolving right alongside the water and grass and trees.

The resort's warm hospitality envelops visitors, setting the stage for a retreat into the heart of the great outdoors. Whether seeking solace in the serenity of the wilderness or craving adrenaline-fueled adventures, Wylder Windham caters to every whim, ensuring a bespoke experience for each guest.

For those eager to commune with nature, Wylder Windham offers an array of outdoor activities to suit every preference. The hotel offers complementary e-bike rentals, allowing you to zip through town with ease. The Windham Path is a stone's throw from the hotel and is a beautiful way to get out among the crisp mountain air with ease. Don't let snow deter you! The hotel will lend you snow shoes to use for the path.

If it's adventure of the downhill variety that tickles your fancy, Windham Mountain is a must visit. There is a decent size gear shop there for any last minute purchases and you can rent gear same day. From lessons to bunny slopes to black diamonds, the skier/snowboarder in your life will be forever grateful when you take them here.

Don't worry if all that standing isn't your definition of "fun" since just across the street is Windham's tubing park, a sitter's delight for a quick trip (or a few) downhill. There is even a snow carpet to hoist you back to the top making this a good option for kids, families or anyone who prefers more sedentary activities. If you plan to indulge in some apres ski festivities or simply don't feel like driving, Wylder Windham offers a shuttle service to and from the mountain. The classic green Land Rover Defender is pretty cool; worth it to snag a picture even if you don't take advantage of the shuttle.

Or, for a more leisurely pursuit, take advantage of the multitude of activities at the hotel. Look out for outdoor saunas sprinkled throughout the property, a lovely way to get warm on cold winter nights. There is tons to do right in the main lodge too. Slip away to the basement for ping pong, pool, shuffleboard, foosball or arcade games. Be warned: once I am on a Galaga streak, it'll be tough to get a game in...

There's also chess and backgammon and other board games to unwind with in front of the fire on the main floor.

I'd be remiss if I did not also implore you to eat lots at the hotel. And eat well you shall! Babblers coffee shop, off the main restaurant by the same name, is a sure bet to start your morning well. Grab a Windham beanie or a parker for your pup while you wait for your latte and tea. The pie is rumored to be among the best in the entire Hudson Valley. Of course, for science, we had to sample many. Though my partner prefers the apple (the hotel's most popular) the must try is my favorite mixed berry. You can thank me later.

The restaurant itself consistently gets top marks in the entirety of Windham town. I'm not sure if it's the bar pumping out top notch cocktails and standout beers all day and night or the kitchen whipping up homemade pastas and perfectly cooked chicken and fresh burrata that keeps people coming back. Actually, yes I am. I am sure it's all of it and more. Get here early or make a reservation - this place fills up for a reason.

I could go on but you and I both know one of the best parts of exploration is discovery. I won't tell you about the classes on offer daily or the smore's party over campfires by the brook or the fly fishing. I won't tell you about the hammocks or swings lawn games or dog run or pickleball courts or mountain overlooks or charming town down the street. Some things you must experience for yourself!

At Wylder Windham, every weekend is an opportunity to reconnect with nature, rejuvenate the spirit, and create memories that endure long after the journey home. Go Wyld.
